Physical strength declines early as we grow old

Image
Physical strength declines early as we grow old Physical strength begins to decline sooner in life than typically detected, often when people are still in their 50s, according to a study. It suggested that efforts to maintain basic strength and endurance should begin before age 50, when it's still possible to preserve the skills that keep people mobile and independent later in life. "Typically, functional tests are conducted on people in their 70s and 80s, and by then you've missed 40 years of opportunities to remedy problems," said Miriam C. Morey, researcher, Duke University School of Medicine in the study published in the journal Duke Health. The researchers studied a group of 775 participants and enrolled participants ranging in age from their 30s through their 100s, with broad representation across sexes and races. All participants performed the same simple tasks to demonstrate strength, endurance or balance: rising from a cha

Why obese women have uncontrollable urge to eat, study reveals

Why obese women have uncontrollable urge to eat, study reveals Women with severe obesity often report an underlying drive to eat continually because their brain’s reward centres continue to respond to food cues even after they have eaten and are no longer hungry, a study says. The findings showed that obese study participants maintained activation in the midbrain, one of the body’s most potent reward centres. The activity in the prefrontal cortex and posterior cingulate cortex significantly changed in the lean group, after eating, but not in the obese group. However, this brain activity dropped among lean participants while continuing in their obese counterparts. “Before or after the meal, they’re just as excited about eating. It seems they have an instinctive drive to keep eating,” said Nancy Puzziferri, Assistant Professor at the University of Texas Southwestern, in the US. Further, while the appeal of pictured food dropped by 15 per cent for lean wom

Shikh Kebabs Meat Platter in Jordan! On Day 4 of our trip to Jordan, we started off in Amman where we had a wonderful simple and local style breakfast of manakish, which are rounds of dough which are flattened, topped with simple things like zaatar and cheese, and baked in an oven. We then took a day trip to As-Salt or also just known as Salt, a historical city about a 45 minute drive from the center of Amman. The highlight of the day for me was the giant shish kebab meat platter that we ate for lunch! 00:38  Manakish - Manakish is something you’ll eat a lot of when you visit the Levant and in Jordan it’s a very popular snack and meal. Manakish is a piece of rounded dough which is flattened out and topped in a variety of different things. We ordered a manakish topped with zaatar, a special herb thyme blend, and also a couple topped with Jordanian white cheese, which is similar to halloumi cheese. They were all excellent mainly because they were baked

Indonesian Beef Ribs at Sop Konro Karebosi

Image
Indonesian Beef Ribs at Sop Konro Karebosi Makassar, located in southern Sulawesi, is known throughout Indonesia for its food, and one of the many famous dishes to try is sop konro, which is beef ribs in a soup. To try this dish in Jakarta, I went to Sop Konro Karebosi, a famous restaurant located in an area of Jakarta known as Kelapa Gading. The restaurant was open air but indoors, and all the ribs and the fish were grilling at the front of the restaurant. Along with the ribs soup, they also had grilled ribs, known at konro bakar, and they had grilled milkfish as well, known as ikan bandeng bakar. Konro bakar (grilled beef ribs) - I had to begin with the konro bakar. The ribs were first boiled I think, and then grilled to give them that wonderful smoky flavor, yet still very tender because they were precooked. After the ribs were finished cooking, they were covered in a peanut sauce. The meat was so unbelievably tender that it literally just slipped off the bo

The Ultimate Indonesian Food Day Trip!

Image
The Ultimate Indonesian Food Day Trip! Our first stop when we drove out of Jakarta and to Bogor was a famous place to eat Bogor style laksa at a restaurant called Laksa Bogor Pak Inin. It was exactly my kind of a restaurant, open air and local, with a wonderful friendly environment. The laksa was unlike any other laksa I’ve ever had, and it was fantastic. Laksa Bogor - 10,000 IDR ($0.72) Next, we stopped at a place called Toge Goreng Pak Abung, which is another legendary Indonesian food stop in Bogor, Indonesia, and they are famous for serving a bean sprout snack. It was definitely a very interesting dish, including a mixture of bean sprouts and fermented soy beans. Toge Goreng - 7,000 IDR ($0.51) Next we drove into the beautiful Indonesian countryside and to the house. After having some Indonesian snacks and refreshing coconut, we then took a hike to go look for honey. The beekeeper was sick on the day we went, so we we’re able to get any honey, but it was still a be

Spicy Hairtail Fish Stew 갈치조림 (Day 6)

Image
Spicy Hairtail Fish Stew 갈치조림 (Day 6) 1:16  Noryangjin Fisheries Wholesale Market - If you love food, visiting Noryangjin Fisheries Wholesale Market when you’re in Seoul is a great idea. It’s one of the biggest central fish markets in Seoul, and you’ll find just about every type of seafood you can imagine and more. After walking around for a while I bought a plate of hwareo hoe, which is sliced Korean style raw fish. Starting the day with some breakfast raw fish is a great idea. 6:02  Braised Hairtail Fish (Galchi Jorim 갈치조림) - I know I’ve been to Namdaemun Market about 3 times in this Seoul travel and food guide series, but that’s because there’s so much good food in that area. When I was eating oxtail soup a few days before, I noticed the Namedaemun Hairtail Alley, and I knew it was a place I wanted to come back to. So today I persuaded my wife and her sisters to go. The Galchi Jorim (갈치조림), or braised hairtail fish stew turned out to be one of my new favorite Korean food

Drug-use may damage ability to choose right from wrong

Image
Drug-use may damage ability to choose right from wrong Regular drug users may have difficulty choosing between right and wrong because the parts of their brains used for moral processing and evaluating emotions are damaged by their prolonged narcotic habits, a new study suggests. Research has shown that stimulant users often find it difficult to identify other people's emotions, particularly fear, and to show empathy. These aspects play an important role in moral decision making, researchers said. Other studies have pointed to structural and functional abnormalities in especially the frontal regions of their brains among stimulant users. These areas are engaged when moral judgements have to be made, they said. "This is the first study to suggest impairments in the neural systems of moral processing in both cocaine and methamphetamine users," said Samantha Fede from University of New Mexico. Poor judgement about moral situations can lead

Exercise improves memory in breast cancer survivors

Image
Exercise improves memory in breast cancer survivors. Exercise may alleviate stress and benefit breast cancer survivors psychologically, which in turn could improve their memory, a new study has found. Researchers also found that memory problems appear to be related to the high stress load cancer survivors experience, and may not be specific to chemotherapy or radiation treatments. “Our research suggests these self-reported memory problems may be emotionally related,” said Siobhan Phillips, assistant professor at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in the US. “These women are frightened, stressed, fatigued, tapped out emotionally and have low self-confidence, which can be very mentally taxing and can lead to perceived memory problems,” said Phillips. In the study, more physical activity was associated with higher levels of self-confidence, lower distress and less fatigue, which in turn is associated with lower levels of perceived memory

Red meat consumption may up kidney failure risk

Image
Red meat consumption may up kidney failure risk Love to binge on red meat such as bacon, sausage, beef or pork? Be careful, an excess intake of red meat may increase the risk of kidney failure, warns a study and adds that consuming plant-based sources of protein may significantly reduce this risk. Increasing number of people are developing chronic kidney disease (CKD) , and many progress to end-stage renal disease (ESRD) , which requires dialysis or a kidney transplant. The findings showed that people who consumed the highest quantity of red meat had a 40 per cent increased risk of developing ESRD compared to people consuming the lowest amount. On the other hand, substituting one serving of red meat with other sources of protein like eggs, dairy products, soy, and legumes reduced the risk of ESRD by up to 62 per cent. "Our findings suggest that people who want to continue eating meat may opt for fish or shellfish and poultry which ar
